Story Map Project



Until 1950 and the rise of anitbiotics, tuberculosis wracked the United States killing large portions of the population and giving rise to many sanitariums. The idea at the time was that fresh air, and moving away from the densely populated cities would allow for one to recover from TB though in truth it merely delayed the inevitable.

The map below highlights a few of the more notable sanitariums which arose during the early years of the TB epidemic, namely those from 1853-1910.
